The biology

How this area works

The dermis is built from collagen and elastin embedded in a hydrated matrix of glycosaminoglycans. Fibroblasts continually produce and degrade this matrix, and the balance between the two shifts with age and with cumulative ultraviolet exposure.

Hair follicles cycle through growth, transition and resting phases. The proportion of follicles in each phase, and the signalling around the dermal papilla, determines density and shedding patterns.

Research in this area uses fibroblast culture, histology, and clinical measures such as skin roughness and hair density counts. Topical, systemic and procedural approaches are studied separately because delivery strongly affects what reaches the tissue.
