The biology
How this area works
Growth hormone is released from the anterior pituitary in pulses, governed by growth hormone releasing hormone, by ghrelin receptor signalling, and by inhibitory somatostatin tone. Most downstream effects are mediated by IGF-1, produced largely in the liver.
Training itself is the primary stimulus for adaptation. Mechanical loading activates signalling that raises muscle protein synthesis, while sleep quality, protein intake and recovery time determine how much of that signal is realised.
Research in this area examines pulsatile hormone release, IGF-1 concentrations, body composition by imaging, and functional measures. Endocrine axes are tightly regulated, so interventions here are assessed against pituitary and metabolic safety rather than performance alone.
