How this area works
After a meal, the intestine releases incretin hormones such as GLP-1 and GIP. These act on the pancreas to influence insulin release, on the stomach to influence the rate of emptying, and on regions of the hypothalamus and brainstem involved in satiety.
Insulin sensitivity in muscle, liver and adipose tissue determines how efficiently circulating glucose is taken up and stored. Reduced sensitivity is associated with a cluster of laboratory findings that clinicians assess together rather than in isolation.
Research in this area typically measures HbA1c, fasting glucose, lipid fractions, blood pressure and body weight. Because these markers interact, interpretation is a clinical task rather than a matter of reading a single number.
