How this area works
Mitochondria generate most cellular ATP and are also signalling organelles. Their capacity depends on the number and quality of mitochondria, on the recycling of damaged ones, and on the availability of cofactors such as NAD+.
Ageing research describes a set of interacting cellular processes, including genomic instability, telomere attrition, altered nutrient sensing, mitochondrial dysfunction and cellular senescence. These are studied as a network rather than as separate targets.
Endpoints in this field are largely biochemical or epigenetic. Because clinical outcomes take decades to observe, most human data measure markers rather than lifespan, and interpretation requires caution.
