The biology
How this area works
Repair proceeds through overlapping phases: an inflammatory phase that clears damaged tissue, a proliferative phase in which new vessels and matrix form, and a remodelling phase in which collagen is reorganised and strengthened over weeks to months.
The intestinal barrier is a single cell layer held together by tight junction proteins and covered by mucus. Its integrity influences local immune activity, and disruption is studied in a range of gastrointestinal conditions.
Immune signalling coordinates all of this. Thymus-derived peptides and cytokine networks influence T-cell maturation and the balance between inflammatory and resolving signals, which is why interventions in this area are evaluated for immune as well as structural effects.
