The biology
How this area works
Neurotrophic factors such as BDNF and NGF support neuronal survival, synapse formation and plasticity. Their expression is influenced by sleep, physical activity, stress hormones and metabolic state.
Attention, memory and mood depend on interacting neurotransmitter systems, including dopaminergic, serotonergic and cholinergic signalling, and on the integrity of the networks these systems modulate.
Research in this area combines animal behavioural models with human cognitive testing and imaging. Cognitive endpoints are sensitive to expectation, sleep and practice effects, so uncontrolled reports are difficult to interpret.
